Located in the heart of the ancient medina of Tetouan, where the walls bear the traces of the past and the patios still whisper secrets, where the scents of jasmine and orange blossoms fill the air, evoking the perfume of the gardens of Andalusia, a singular place is born, where tradition becomes a source of creation. A space where traditions meet to inspire and renew themselves. El Patio is a living cultural space, celebrating the Andalusian-Moroccan heritage through art, fashion, and craftsmanship. Installed in a restored ancient stable with care, respect, and a focus on sustainability, this space combines ancestral know-how with contemporary design. El Patio is more than just a concept store: it's a place of meeting, inspiration, and transmission.
Before becoming The Patio, a cultural haven, it bore another name: El Roua El Kebir the great stable. Its story goes back to the late 18th century, when it served as a resting place for pack and transport animals, as well as flocks of sheep arriving from the outskirts of Tetouan.
Over time, it collapsed and remained abandoned for nearly forty years, until we discovered it and were captivated by its Moorish arches and unique character. We began restoring it in 2022, in a project that lasted three years, during which we carefully preserved its spirit and architectural features, maintaining its façade and the distinctive Moorish arches of Tetouan, and restoring it with recycled and eco-friendly materials.
The fountain became the emblem of The Patio, symbolizing the importance of this natural water flowing from the mountains of Tetouan. In fact, the city’s name comes from its Berber origin Tittawin, meaning “springs of water.” The Moriscos from Andalusia had planned it with a precise map, where water was wisely and skillfully distributed throughout the neighborhoods and houses of the medina. That is why we made great efforts to bring it back.
Today, water flows once again at the heart of The Patio, like a heart restored to life. And in this heart, a new story is born: the sheep’s wool becomes thread, the thread becomes fabric, and the fabric turns into living memory.
“Here, the story is not preserved, but woven.”
